Software Deployment

by brian on Jan.28, 2009, under Software Deployment

I have come across a new talent that has helped me greatly at my current job. Deploying software remotely has decreased the amount of downtime my students have as well as made my job a little bit easier.

For example Deploying printer installs allows me to install one network printer on 30+ computers instantly and using simple batch and vbs scripts allows me to do this while a user is on the machine without interrupting.

Our company mostly uses Lexmark printers in which Lexmark has intelligently made all of there devices use ONE driver, therefore i can download the Lexmark Universal Driver (white paper) and install multiple printers with one driver thus keeping space down on my server and saving me time.

Now how ever you deside to execute the fallowing script depends on your setup but in a nut shell you will have to make 3 scripts on one file. (Copy drivers to disk, create IP port, install driver attached to IP port) I will have these up tomorrow.

On that note my favorite bumper sticker from think geek

The NEW!!! Laptop

by brian on Mar.15, 2008, under Life Story

So I was browsing on http://www.woot.com the other day and came across this,

Woot! Laptop

Perfect! I need a new laptop, but how much? $313 !!!!! WIN!!!! Bought it, and got it the other day.

Gateway

Great pull it out of the box, plug it in, turn it on and what do I see?

Vista

Now I know that vista isn’t the best operating system, and the fact that it looks feels and reminds me of Ubuntu. So the question is asked not whether it was the chicken or the egg but.. Ubuntu or vista? Obviously we know the answer to that question…. Oh well I figure I just got a laptop for $100 more than the cost of a vista license. Great! One problem, This only has a Celeron™ M, with 512mb of ram…. NOOOOOOO vista takes about 1 min to boot and I can’t run the side bar while playing a movie because it lags the picture. So what do I do! Upgrade. First the ram. holy crap! ram is dirt cheep so I buy 2 gigs of ram for $54.90

Ram

That should do it, but then I realize this thing needs dual core… And What do I find! It supports it, FSB is good and Cooling is adequate for doing dual core. So I fire up the o` Ebay search and I find this.

processor
Intel® Core™Duo processor T2050 1.6GHz 2MB 533MHz SL9BN for only $45 making my total laptop cost $412.90 Just over $400 Now in my book thats a steal.

I’m still running vista on it, I figure I’ll keep it like this for a couple of months and learn this useless operating system and then go back to my good o` Ubuntu (I miss it a lot already :( ….)

Ubuntu Applications!

by brian on Feb.29, 2008, under Information Technology

So the wonderful saga of my laptop running Ubuntu 7.10 continues. Everything has been running beautiful and I have been looking into new applications and goodies. First, I was introduced to this wonderful video podcast manager called “Miro” Its great, runs smooth manages and downloads new videos while I sleep and Allows me to add new feeds.

Miro Screen Shot

Next is this old and faithful IRC(internet relay chat) application which we all know and love to be XChat. Now back on the windows days there was always a fully edited MIRC(my internet relay chat) to my liking known as VorexIRC, was a project worked on by a good friend of mine(vorex) in which i sorta beta tested for. Great build, only half finished.. this however is 100% finished and 100% customizable which is great! So in lack of kowoladge on editing and making it my own, and not wanting to run bitchX from a terminal window in the GUI I’d reccomend Xchat

And finaly a screen shot of my shell, gotta love linux!

Cold Fusion?

by brian on Feb.22, 2008, under Information Technology

The curriculum for Web design requires the students to learn Cold fusion. Now I’ve never had a reason for this application yet was spent with the task on setting it up for our web design class. I have never though of using cold fusion for my web application’s needs, its always been PHP with MySQL, I know of only one site (not confirmed) that is a major user of Macromedia/adobe’s Cold Fusion and thats http://www.myspace.com . I see how crappy there site works, how it always pulls errors and can never handle lots of users at once. Which leads me to believe this is crap, it will never be used in the professional world and will never become a simple solution to everyday webmaster’s problems. Why are we teaching it though? I hope that next year the students get the opportunity to learn PHP instead of this outdated piece of junk.

On a side note, I’m working on a server box, and will be looking into dual Xeon motherboard so if you have any suggestions please email! brian at hypernexus dot net

Writing Tutorials

by brian on Feb.13, 2008, under Information Technology, Life Story

So lately at my job there has been a need for writing tutorials for software being used to help us better troubleshoot and solve glitches and problems. This unfortunately is not an issue but I would like to better my self in writing them in which anybody who is over the age of five will be able to fallow and correctly adjust and fix the problem. I feel my self lacking this ability so if there is any information you can spare me by all means fork it over or email it to brian@hypernexus.net . The overall look of my current tutorials are very bland no screen shots because that would make the files to big for email, and lacking overall structure plus I feel you need some computing skills to be able to fallow them. So if anybody has any tips or pointers please let me know, I’m all ears. On side note I am looking into building a new pc I will send up screenshots and information on hardware, software, and any other gizmo I decide to buy :-D

The Paycheck

by brian on Feb.08, 2008, under Life Story

So my first full paycheck from Suncoast High School was and is a wonderful thing. It is equal to three and one half weeks of one week at Publix. I work with a wonderful group of people at a place where I can really grow. It’s a wonderful thing once you take your craft and turn it into your career, the stress gone, working hard??? I love it the harder the better when it comes to IT. So take this from me, if you know what you want to do for the rest of your life push for it. Do whatever it takes short of breaking the law to get to your goal you will thank me for it.

Palm Beach County Sheriff Officers

by brian on Feb.07, 2008, under Life Story

So I’m driving to work today nothing unusual slow traffic staying to left not to the right, people doing 5 to 10 under the speed limit fully loaded trucks driving to there destination with no courtesy to the other motorist.

Traveling in the left lane at least for me is what I like to call the “fast lane” as in people do the speed limit or higher. No place for an off duty copy with a full loaded tail bed in his old busted red truck to be doing 5 under. Traffic here at six in the morning is like rush hour so it’s not as if I had the ability to pass. This guy gets the nerve while he is “Off Duty” to call his “On Duty” buddy to come and pull me over. A. I was pulled over long after the “Off Duty” cop made his left turn and B. all it did was piss me off I felt that if I am paying your salary to do the dangerous job of being a police officer you need to use it respectfully. Not pull over innocent people for “Tailing to close” when you were not even there to whiteness. Frankly the “Off Duty” cop had his truck so full I don’t even think he could properly see me and how close I really was. So take a note people, when driving in Florida you have to be pissed off or else the state will piss you off. < / rant>

Ubuntu 7.10 and Compiz Fusion

by brian on Feb.07, 2008, under Information Technology

Work in Progress

So I recently installed Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibson on my Gateway MX6030 which has been running great! The DVD-RW is burnt out so i was even lucky to get the install threw. It was half broken until i discovered the reason why nothing was being updated. None of the compilers C++ codes or any of the updates were working until i discovered the Software Sources. So i had to Download over 160 updates and it was up and running. I originally started on Slackware 9.10 command line. Learned everything from the ground up then Ubuntu comes along and simplifies everything. So heres some screen shots!

It isn’t much now, i will post videos soon!
